The Bible is inspired by the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 3:16, 2 Peter 1:21). The Holy Spirit is part of the Holy Trinity; God, Son and Holy Spirit. The Bible is the inspired Word of God! God did not dictate exactly what each writer should say; rather, He used each writer's unique personality and style while still assuring that we have the exact words He wants us to have. God ensured that each writer wrote what God has to tell the people. For example, Luke was a doctor. He included a lot of details about health and healing in his writings. Matthew was a Jewish tax collector. His writings feature many Old Testament quotes and Jesus' teachings about money.
Why do we need an inspired Bible? Every human has a basic instinct to believe in a higher being. Isaiah 55:9 tells us that God is greater than man. At the same time, man is separated from God by sin; For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God thanks to Adam's original sin (Romans 3:28, Genesis 3). What happens when we misbehave at school or home? We have to face the consequences of our misbehavior, right? There are consequences for man's sin also. Romans 6:23 tells us that the consequences of sin is death, but God provided a gift, a way out of the punishment through Jesus Christ. But God commanded his love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us; Romans 5:8.
So what evidence do we have that the Bible is inspired of God? The Bible was written over 600 years by 40 different authors and no where is there any contradictions, a sign of spiritual unity. Bible prophecy is completely accurate. Events are predicted in the Old Testament and then fulfilled in the New Testament. There are some 250 quotes from Old Testament books in the New Testament. Archeology, the scientific study of past human culture and behavior from the origins of humans to the present, confirms scripture. And the Bible is historically accurate. Jesus spoke of several Old Testament events in his teachings, and spoke of them as fact. In Matthew 24:38,39, Jesus spoke of the flood and Noah mentioned in the Old Testament. Matthew 12:40, Jesus spoke of Jonah spending three days in the belly of a whale. 2 Peter 1:20,21 tells us that the Bible is not any one man's idea or the will of man, but was written by holy men of God moved by the Holy Ghost.
Why is the Bible important to man? Jesus said "It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4). 2 Timothy 3:16 tells us that the Bible can teach us in four different ways. It teaches doctrine or what we need to believe in. It teaches how to reprimand for misconduct, always showing love and compassion, but at the same time correcting the misbehavior and putting us back on the correct path. And most important, it teaches us righteousness, i.e. loving others even our enemies, telling others of Jesus and his free gift to us, praising and worshiping God.
